Getting around Edinburgh

By Bus

Edinburgh has a well established bus network covering the city and surrounding areas and buses run 24 hours a day (selected routes) on a frequent basis. Within the city, Edinburgh’s local bus service consists of approximately 70 routes in and around the city, with contactless payments accepted on all buses. Single fares cost £2.00 while day tickets offering unlimited journeys are capped at £4.80 if paying by contactless. A day ticket can be purchased for £5.

By Tram

Edinburgh Trams began operating in 2014 and has a single route that connects the airport to Leith & Newhaven via the city centre. It is approximately 35 minutes from the airport to Princes street. Trams operate from 05:20am to approximately 11pm on a frequent basis (every 7-15 minutes depending on day and time of day). All trams require a ticket to be purchased before boarding the trams - single and day tickets are available for purchase. A Combined Network Ticket that allows travel on all trams and Lothian buses is also available.

The Transport for Edinburgh app is available to download for major mobile platforms and can help with journey planning and purchasing of tickets.

By Foot

Edinburgh is a great city for walking and most city centre attractions can easily be reached on foot. Visitors can walk between the Old and New Town, which is also one of two UNESCO World Heritage sites, easily and quickly. The EICC is approximately 20 minutes walk from Princes Street.

By Taxi

Edinburgh has a large fleet of black cabs that can easily be hailed (If their lights are on) on the street or taken from any of the taxi ranks located around the city centre.

Taxis can generally be found gathered outside any of the big hotels waiting for a fare. There are also designated taxi ranks dotted across the city – a few of the most notable are on Market Street, South St Andrew Street, and Lothian Road.
